Tags classify the lawsuit by legal theme or economic sector. They are not exclusive: the same lawsuit can — and often will — get several tags at once. A consumer action against a telephone carrier, for example, comes out with consumer and telecom. There are 36 tags in 6 areas.
Methodological note: since tags overlap, the sum of lawsuits per tag is greater than the total number of lawsuits in a portfolio. To count unique lawsuits, use the portfolio total — not the sum of tags.

How flagging works

Each tag has its own dictionary. The tag becomes true when the lawsuit matches at least one of that dictionary’s rules. There are three criteria, which can be used alone or combined:

Subject

35 tags. Subject code from the Unified Procedural Table (TPU/CNJ) registered on the lawsuit. It is the main criterion and covers almost the entire dictionary.

Class

22 tags. TPU procedural class — for example, tax foreclosure, public civil action or judicial reorganization. Captures the type of proceeding even when the subject is generic.

CNPJ root

10 tags. The first 8 digits of a party’s CNPJ. Identifies the sector by the company involved (bank, insurer, carrier, concessionaire, platform), covering all branches.
Inactive TPU codes stay in the dictionary. Older lawsuits keep subject and class codes that the CNJ has already deactivated. These codes are kept on purpose so the historical collection remains correctly classified.

Where tags appear

Tags arrive in the tags object of response_data, as boolean keys, alongside the lawsuit’s control metadata (such as dictionary_updated_at). Only the tags that apply to the lawsuit appear: treat a missing key, or any value other than true, as false.
For sealed lawsuits (secrecy_level greater than 0), the tags object is not returned.
